CASE: Create a digital solution for the library's audiobooks.

According to a survey, 40% of all 25–35 year-olds occasionally listens to audiobooks. Since the goal was to increase usage, I went ahead with that target group to help them to a better experience.


RESEARCH AND USER RESEARCH

I asked the target group about their experience with audio books and concluded that the need exists and their motivations were as follows:

1. Audiobooks, podcasts and music are used for relaxation, ”entering another world".
2. The target group is curious and books are seen as a source of inspiration and knowledge. The
target group likes the library and the literary feeling.
3. The target group is active and wants to be able to "read" at the same time as they exercise, travel
or clean.

However, few people knew that the library had audiobooks and those who had tested found the service difficult. I put on the customer's shoes and tested.

Difficult to get the existing app, you have to go to the library and with your card apply for the app.
2. I didn’t have a card so it took me two weeks …
3. Librarians had no or little knowledge about the service.
4. When getting the app it was difficult to navigate.
5. Also I couldn’t listen offline.


ITERATING

After identifying problems in the current service, work began on user story maps, sketches wireframes and design.

DESIGN CHOICES, BASED ON THE TARGET GROUPS MOTIVATIONS

”Entering another world”
I wanted to welcome the user to a world of magic and knowledge where the story is the focus. The splash screen shows a sky with a shooting star that puts the user in the right mood and the genre images as well as well-chosen quotes create curiosity.

”Knowledge”
I designed the content in an editorial way with author interviews and reading tips. The books are in focus and the covers where not cropped as they sometimes are other audiobook apps.

“Activity”
My interviews taught me that the target group uses similar services while doing other things. For users traveling to exciting locations around the world, it was important for the user to download books offline.
